Karandeep-CN Canada: June 17, 2026 — Leaders of the Group of Seven nations have issued a landmark joint statement from Évian, France, reaffirming their commitment to global peace, security, and economic stability — with Canada emerging as a significant contributor to the world's energy future.

Canada's Moment on the Global Stage

In a notable recognition of Canada's growing energy potential, G7 Leaders collectively welcomed Canada's capacity to deliver significant additional supply to global energy markets in the coming years. The statement positions Canada as a critical partner in the G7's broader strategy to diversify global energy supply routes and reduce international vulnerability — particularly in light of ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. This acknowledgment from the world's most powerful democracies underscores Canada's rising stature as a reliable, stable, and strategically important energy supplier on the world stage.

Historic US-Iran Deal and Middle East Breakthrough

G7 Leaders welcomed a landmark deal between the United States and Iran, crediting President Trump's leadership in securing an agreement aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and addressing regional security threats. The statement described the development as a historic opportunity for peace and stability across the Middle East.

Leaders reaffirmed that the right of transit passage through international waters remains the bedrock of global trade, and expressed support for a France and UK-led multinational maritime initiative to facilitate the safe resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, including the removal of mines and protection of merchant vessels.

On Lebanon, G7 Leaders expressed support for an immediate robust ceasefire and the disarmament of Hezbollah, while calling for the protection of Lebanon's sovereignty. On Gaza, Leaders committed to accelerating humanitarian and reconstruction efforts and called for an end to violence in the West Bank.

Unwavering Support for Ukraine

G7 Leaders reaffirmed their united and unwavering support for Ukraine's freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The statement acknowledged Ukraine's resilience and battlefield progress, noting a new momentum in the conflict.

Leaders committed to increasing the delivery of air defence systems, interceptors, and long-range military capabilities to Ukraine, while also considering expanded licences to boost Ukraine's own military production. Additional support was also pledged to help Ukraine through the coming winter, with a focus on energy resilience.

To further pressure Russia's war economy, G7 nations agreed to strengthen sanctions on Russia's oil and gas sectors.

Indo-Pacific Stability and North Korea Concerns

On the Indo-Pacific, G7 Leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based region. They expressed firm opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion in the East and South China Seas and across the Taiwan Strait, emphasizing that any resolution must come through peaceful dialogue.

Leaders expressed deep concern over North Korea's continued nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and reiterated their commitment to complete denuclearization in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. They also flagged the need to jointly address North Korea's cryptocurrency thefts and cybercrimes.

G7 Leaders also welcomed the Global Convergence for Growth Summit convened by French President Macron on June 11, 2026, with China's participation, expressing a common interest in addressing large and persistent global economic imbalances.
