Karandeep-March 15, 2026:

Canada is stepping up its global defense strategy, with Prime Minister Mark Carney focusing on stronger partnerships with Nordic countries to boost Arctic security, defense cooperation, and economic growth.

During his visit to Norway, Prime Minister Carney attended key military and diplomatic engagements aimed at strengthening Canada’s presence in the Arctic region. In Bardu Foss, he observed Exercise Cold Response, a major NATO-led military drill designed to improve coordination and readiness in extreme Arctic conditions.

The Prime Minister was joined by Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store and Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting growing international cooperation in response to rising global security challenges. In Oslo, Canada and Norway announced plans to expand their long-standing partnership. The discussions focused on defense collaboration, support for Ukraine, Arctic cooperation, and new opportunities in trade, energy, and critical minerals. Both countries also explored future partnerships in advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and space security.

Carney also participated in the Canada-Nordic Summit alongside leaders from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The meeting reinforced a shared commitment to strengthening security and economic ties across the North Atlantic region. On the business front, the Prime Minister met with major investors and highlighted Canada as a strong destination for global investment. A key development includes Canadian company Champion Iron moving forward with the acquisition of Norway-based Rana Gruber ASA in a deal valued at approximately $400 million, signaling deeper economic cooperation.

Following his Norway visit, Prime Minister Carney is set to travel to the United Kingdom to continue discussions on defense, trade, and economic partnerships with British leadership. With rising global uncertainties, Canada is focusing on strengthening alliances, modernizing its defense systems, and building long-term economic partnerships—especially in the Arctic, a region considered vital to the country’s future.
