Massive Protests Shake Iran as Internet Blackout Continues

Tehran | Jan 12, 2026 : Iran is witnessing one of its largest waves of protests in recent years, as thousands of people have taken to the streets in several cities. The demonstrations are mainly driven by rising living costs, unemployment, and growing anger over political restrictions.

In response, Iranian authorities have imposed a nationwide internet shutdown. Mobile data and social media platforms have been largely blocked, making it difficult for people to communicate, share videos, or access independent news. Officials say the restrictions are needed to maintain public order, but critics argue the blackout is meant to hide the scale of the protests. Witnesses and human rights groups report clashes between protesters and security forces in multiple areas. Hospitals in major cities have confirmed receiving many injured people, though official figures have not been fully released. Arrests have also been reported, with families struggling to contact detained relatives due to the communication shutdown.

Protesters are demanding economic relief, more personal freedoms, and political reforms. Chants heard during demonstrations suggest growing frustration among young people and workers, who say daily life has become increasingly difficult. International reaction has been swift. Governments in Europe and North America, along with global rights organizations, have expressed concern over the use of force and the internet blackout. They have called on Iranian authorities to respect peaceful protest and restore access to communication services.

Despite the restrictions, protests continue in several regions, showing no clear signs of slowing down. Analysts say the situation remains tense, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
